More Like Falling in Love

Give me rules,I will break them.
Give me lines,I will cross them.

Every time I hear those first two lines of the song “More Like Falling in Love” by Jason Gray, I wonder how he got inside my head and read my thoughts. Tell me I can’t do something and a beast roars inside me, silently yelling, “Oh yeah, just try and stop me.” If you don’t believe me, just ask the men in my life, specifically my dad and my husband. As a teenager, although my parents and I butted heads frequently, I remember one time when my dad forbade me to do something. I’m sure you can guess the result – I went out and did it anyway. Rarely does my husband definitively say he does or does not want me to do something, but the few times he has have stirred up a battle within me between my inner roaring beast and my vow to honor my husband.

So why is it that I, with my stubborn independence and rebellious nature, can follow whole-heartedly after a God who wrote a book with not just the ten well-known laws, but a full 613 laws in it? Jason Gray answers that question perfectly in the rest of the first verse of his song,

I need more than a truth to believe
I need a truth that lives, moves, and breathes
To sweep me off my feet

Later in the chorus it describes the nature of our relationship with God as,

More like losing my heart
Than giving my allegiance

Although I didn’t have the maturity for this response as a teen-ager with my parents, going back to the battle to rebel or honor my husband, honor wins. Not because I’ve been told to – that would just intensify the desire to do my own thing! Honoring him wins because I love him. Likewise, I don’t do my best to obey Scripture because I’ve been told to. Again, that would just increase my determination to rebel and disobey. I try to live according to the pages of Scripture simply because I love God.

All religion ever made of me
Was just a sinner with a stone tied to my feet
It never set me free

  1. Yes, what a powerful song. Reviewing Experiencing God this summer has reminded me how my love for God is shown through my obedience to Him. And He isn't just concerned about obedience but following the spirit of the law, too.
